Chap. 726.—An ACT for the relief of Lemuel Bennington, Sr., a disabled Con-
federate veteran.
Approved March 5, 18H.
Whereas at the commencement of the late civil war Lemuel Ben-
nington, senior, of the county of Nelson, entered the army of the
Contederate States as a member of company “I,” forty-sixth regi-
ment, Wise’s brigade; and whereas in a fight at the Howlett House
with the forces of General Butler’s division of the United States
army, the said Lemuel Bennington, senior, while bearing dispatches
on the field of conflict was severely wounded in the left shoulder and
arm, also in the leg, and the index finger of the right hand cut off,
and from said wounds he has suffered ever since, having lost the use
of his left arm entirely, not being able to dress himself without as-
sistance, and being seventy-seven years of age: now, therefore,
1. Be it enacted by the general assembly of Virginia, That the au-
ditor of public accounts be, and he is hereby, directed to enter the
name of Lemuel Bennington, senior, as participating from the begin-
ning of the fiscal year of eighteen hundred and ninety-three and
eighteen hundred and ninety-four, in the list, as prescribed and de-
signated in the act approved March fifth, eighteen hundred and
eighty-eight, for those who lost a leg or an arm from wounds actu-

ally received while in service, and under any similar act that ma:
be passed, and pay to the said Lemuel Bennington, senior, the sam:
commutation that is paid to other soldiers who lost a leg or an arn
from wounds received in the service and come under the provision
of that act or similar acts: provided that the amount of fifteen dol
lars, which is now paid to said Bennington, under the certificate o
the county court of Nelson county, shall be deducted from what h
may be entitled to under the provisions of this act.
2. This act shall be in force from its passage.
