Chap. 572.—An ACT to amend and re-enact section 8796 of the
code of Virginia, in reference to the punishment of the offence
of cruelty to animals.
Approved March 1, 1892.
1. Be it enacted by the general assembly of Virginia,
That section thirty-seven hundred and ninety-six of the
code of Virginia be amended and re-enacted so as to read
as follows: °
§ 3796. Cruelty to animals; how punished.—A person
who overrides, overloads, tortures, or cruelly beats, or un-
justifiably injures, maims, mutilates, or kills any animal,
whether belonging to himself or another, or deprives any
animal of necessary sustenance, food or drink, or causeg,
procures, or permits any animal to be overridden, over-
loaded, tortured, cruelly beaten or unjustifiably injured,
maimed, mutilated or killed, or to be deprived of neces-
sary food and drink, or who wilfully sets on foot, insti-
gates, engages in, or in any way furthers any act of cruelty
to any animal, or who, having in custody a maimed, dis-
eased, disabled or infirm animal and abandons such ani-
mal, or leaves it to die in a public street, road or public
place, or who shall carry or caused to be carried in or upon
any vessel or vehicle, or otherwise carry any animal in a
cruel or inhuman manner, or so as to produce torture, shall
be fined not more than fifty dollars for each offence.
Be it further enacted, that the provisons of this act may
be enforced by any justice of the peace in the cities,
towns or counties wherein the offence is committed or the
offender may be found; and every such offender shall
have the right of appeal to the corporation court in cities
and county court in counties.
2. This act shall be in force from its passage.
