CHAP. 483.—An ACT to amend and re-enact section 1 of chapter
491 of the acts of 1889-’90, in relation to working public roads in
Chesterfield and Powhatan counties.

1. Be it enacted by the general assembly of Virginia,
That section one of chapter four hundred and ninety-one
of the acts of eighteen hundred and eighty-nine and eigh-
teen hundred and ninety, be amended and re-enacted so
as to read as follows:
§ 1. That the boards of supervisors of the counties of
Chesterfield and Powhatan shall take charge of and have
worked and kept in repair all public roads, and have built
and kept in repair all bridges in said counties, heretofore
and hereafter established, and for this purpose are author-
ized and empowered, at the July meeting in each year, or
as soon thereafter as practicable, to levy a road tax upon
all proper subjects of taxation not exceeding in any one
year twenty cents upon the hundred dollars assessed value
of taxable property in said counties, and to adopt such
rules and regulations as may be necessary to cause the
proper working of said roads; and to this end the said
boards of supervisors may permit land owners to pay the
amount of road tax assessed against them, or such portion
thereof as the said boards may direct, in work upon the
public roads contiguous to their lands, and the road-tax
tickets against such Jand owners shall be credited by said
boards by the amount which they may have agreed shall be
paid by the said land owners in work.
2. This act shall be in force from its passage.
