Chap. 301.—An ACT for the relief of James T. Southward.
Approved February 16, 1892.
Whereas James T. Southward, of Hanover county, a
member of Woolfolk’s battery, army of northern Virginia,
while in the discharge of his duty as a soldier of Virginia,
in the war between the states, and while engaged in the
battle of Gettysburg, on July second, eighteen hundred
and sixty-three, received a gunshot wound which perma-
nently disabled him; and whereas the said James T.
Southward has recently been paralyzed so that his dis-
ability is as fatal as if he had Jost a leg or an arm; and
whereas he is in all other respects entitled to the benefits
of the act of assembly approved March fifth, eighteen
hundred and eighty-eight, providing commutation to sold-
lers, sailors and marines of Virginia disabled in said war;
therefore,
1. Be it enacted by the genera] assembly of Virginia,
That the auditor of public accounts be, and he is hereby,
directed to enter the name of said James T. Southward in
the list as prescribed and designated in the act approved
March fifth, eighteen hundred and eighty-eight, for those
who lost a leg or an arm from wounds actually received
while in service, and under any similar act that may be
passed, and pay to the said James T. Southward the same
commutation that is paid to other soldiers who lost a leg
oran arm from wounds received in the service, and come
under the provisions of that act or similar acts.
2. This act shall be in force from its passage.
