Chap. 222.—An ACT to incorporate Blackstone female institute.
Approved February 15, 1892.
1. Be it enacted by the general assembly of Virginia,
That J.S. Hunter, J. C. Watson, J. A. Hardy, Benjamin
irby, John P. Irby, George P. Adams, Charles B. Hardy,
H.C. McCulloch, Joseph W. Crowder, William H. Cralle,
E. Frank Crowe, R. W. Manson, Isam T. Bagley, R. E.
Bridgforth, G. E. Kennedy, G. E. Barrow, J. W. Harda-
way, G. Trenley Cralle, Lewis D. Hardy, A. C. Ogburn,
K. W. Russell, E. S. Emory, Thomas Cralle, James E.
Clarke, H. W. Nosworthy, John P. Whitmore, T. H. Camp-
bell, R. H. Blankinship, and eight others to be hereafter
elected under the fourth section of this act, and their as-
sociates and successors, be, and they are hereby, consti-
tuted a body politic and corporate under the name and
style of the Blackstone female institute, to be located at
Blackstone, Nottoway county, Virginia, and by that name
shall have perpetual succession and a common seal, sue
and be sued, plead and be impleaded, purchase, receive,
hold, sell, and dispose of any property, real and personal,
necessary and proper for the use and benefit of said insti-
tute; and under their common seal make and establish,
from time to time, such rules, regulations, and by-laws,
not contrary to the laws of Virginia for the appointment,
government and control of the professors and students
thereof, and for the conduct and maintenance of a female
college or school.
2. The corporators above named, and their associates
and successors, shall constitute a board of managers, in
whom shall be vested, under the supervision of the con-
ference of the presiding elder’s district of the Methodist
episcopal church, south, in which this institute is lo-
cated, all the powers hereby granted.
3. The board of managers shall have power to elect its
own president and other officers, and to establish rules,
regulations and by-lgws for their government, and to take
bonds for the faithful performance of their duties; to
locate and erect suitable buildings; to establish the cur-
riculum of said institute; to fix the requisites for the
degrees, to be conferred, and to confer upon any student
or students they may deem worthy the different scholastic
degrees conferred by other colleges, seminaries and insti-
tutes of learning, and to award diplomas.
4. All vacancies now existing, or that may hereafter
arise from death, resignation, or otherwise, shall be filled
by said board, subject to the approval of the conference of
the presiding elder’s district of the Methodist episcopal
church, south, in ‘which the institute is located: provided,
that at no time shall the board of managers consist of
greater number than thirty-six.
5. The professors, instructors and teachers in said inst
tute are hereby constituted conservators of the peace, wit
all the powers and liabilities thereof during the session
of said institute and within the grounds of the same.
6. This act shall be in force from its passage.
