Chap. 194.—An ACT to incorporate the Norfolk society for the
prevention of cruelty to animals.

1. Be it enacted by the general assembly of Virginia,
That W. F. Irvine, James E. Heath, B. P. Loyall, John L..
Roper, M. K. King, C. E. Jenkins, L. T. Gwathmey, R. Y.
Zachary, E. K. Robertson, W. A. Edwards, L. C. Kilby, C.
Billups, W. R. Mayo, Ethan Allen, K. C. Murray, D. Lowen-
berg, C. H. Ramsey, Geo. W. Taylor, W. W. Vicar, N. M.
Osborne, M. Glennan, M. L. T. Davis, George C. Billups,
all of the city of Norfolk in the state of Virginia, and
such other persons as are now, or may hereafter be, asso-
ciated with them and their successors, be, and they are
hereby, constituted a body corporate under the name and
style of the Norfolk society for the prevention of cruelty
to animals, and by that name shall have perpetual succes-
sion and & common seal.
2. The object of the said corporation shall be the pre-
vention of cruelty to animals.
3. The said corporation may sue or be sued, contract
and be contracted with, may acquire by purchase, gift,
devise, or bequest, property, real or personal, and may
lease, manage, control, exchange, mortgage, sell, convey, or
dispose of said property. The value of real property to
be held by said corporation at any one time shall not
exceed the sum of twenty-five thousand dollars, and the
amount of personal property shall not exceed ten thousand
dollars.
4. The officers of the said corporation shall consist of a
president, five vice-presidents, one secretary, one trea-
surer, who, together with the counsel of said corporation,
shall be ex-officio members of the executive committee,
which committee shall consist of ten members in addition
to the ex-officio members above named.
5. The foregoing officers shall be chosen from among
the members of the society in such manner as its by-laws
may prescribe.
6. A library may be created for the use of the society.
7. The said society, for fixing the terms of admission of
its members, for the government of the same, for the elec-
tions, changing and altering the officers above named, and
for the general regulation and management of its affairs,
shall have power to form a code of by-laws not inconsist-
ent with the laws of the state of Virginia, or of the United
States, which code, when formed and adopted at a regular
meeting, shall, until modified or rescinded, be equally
binding as this act upon the society, its officers and mem-
ers.
8. This act shall be in force from its passage.
