CHAP. 179.—An ACT to amend section 256 of the code relating
to historical works and relics, and to repeal sections 257 and 258
of said code.
Approved March 4, 1890.
1. Be it enacted by the general assembly of Virginia,
That section two hundred and fifty-six of the code of Vir-
ginia be amended and re-enacted so as to read as follows:
§256. Historical works and relics.—The committee shall
especially cause to be procured, from time to time, as
opportunity may offer, a copy of any book, pamphlet, or
manuscript, work of art, or relic relating to the history
of Virginia, not now in the general library, which can be
»btained on reasonable terms, and may cause to be printec
ny manuscript relating to the history of Virginia whick
nave not been published, including such portions of the
2xecutive journals and executive letter-books, and of the
legislative papers, as the committee may deem proper t
print in the calendar of state papers, and shall cause the
legislative papers so to be printed to be arranged for tha
purpose and preserved for reference.
2. Sections two hundred and fifty-seven and two hun
dred and fifty-eight of the code of Virginia are hereby
repealed.
3. This act shall be in force from its passage.
CHapP. 180.—An ACT to amend and re-enact section 4411 of th
code of Virginia touching the duties of the assessors of lands.

Virginia be amended and re-enacted so as to read as fol
lows :
$441. Duties of assessors.—The assessors shall, imme
diately after their appointment, proceed to examine all thi
Jand and lots, with the improvements thereon, within thei.
respective counties, districts, and corporations, and shall
upon such examination, ascertain and assess the casl
value thereof, and at the same time shall note whethe
the owner is white or colored. In performing such dutie
the assessors shall be governed by and comply with th
provisions of section four hundred and seventy-two of th
code of Virginia as if the same by its terms were mad
specially applicable to them.
2. This act shall be in force from its passage.
