Chap. 84.—An ACT to incorporate the Color. d Mutual Progres-
sive Association of Prince Edward, Cumberland and Amelia
counties.
Approved January 24, 1890.
1. Be it enacted by the general assembly of Virginia,
That N. M. Griggs, Henry Johnson, Henry Hill, James
Lilscon, Anderson Johnson, John W. White, J. J. Col-
man, and such other persons as are now or may hereafter
become members of the association, be, and they are here-
by, made a body politic and corporate by the name and
style of colored mutual and progressive association of
Prince Edward, Cumberland and Amelia, the object of
which shall be to promote social intercourse, mutual
assistance, and dispense charity, and by that name shall
have perpetual succession and a common seal; may sue
and be sued, plead and be impleaded.
2. The said corporation shall have power to make and
adopt a constitution and by-laws (not inconsistent with
the laws of this state), rules and regulations for the
admission, government, expulsion, and suspension of its
members; the collection of fees and dues; the number and
election of its officers, and to define their duties, and for
the safe-keeping and protection of its property and man-
agement of its affairs, and to alter, modify and change
such constitution, by-laws, rules, and regulations from
time to time.
3. The said association shall have power to take by pur-
chase, legacy, devise, gift or otherwise, real and per-
sonal property not exceeding ten thousand dollars in
value, and the same to hold, transfer, grant and convey,
as its purposes may require.
4. All taxes, debts and demands due from the said com-
pany to the state of Virginia shall be paid in currency
and not in coupons.
5. This act shall be in force from its passage.
