CHAP. 614.—An ACT to empower surveyors to collect road fines
in Mathews county.
Approved March 5, 1890.
1. Be it enacted by the general assembly of Virginia,
That the road surveyors shall collect the road fines in their
several road precincts in Mathews-county, and have power
to levy or distrain therefor, and shall return lists of all
fines collected to the clerk of the county court of said
county, in the same manner as is provided for constables
and sheriffs under section ten hundred and ten of the
code of Virginia. They shall receive one-fourth of all
fines and costs collected by them as their compensation
for collecting the same; and for any failure to comply
with the requirements of this act they shall be subject ‘to
the penalty provided in section ten hundred and twelve
of the code of Virginia for failure to perform their duties.
2. All acts and parts of acts inconsistent with this act
are hereby repealed.
3. This act shall be in force from its passage.
CHAP 615.—An ACT to provide for removing obstructions in
Sandy river, in Prince Edward county.
Approved March 5, 1890.
1. Be it enacted by the general assembly of Virginia,
That it shall be lawful for the board of supervisors of
Prince Edward county, Virginia, to impose, levy, and cause
to be collected an annual tax of twelve cents per acre upon
all low lands subject to overflow lying on either side of
Sandy river in said county, from its mouth to the lands of
B. Weaver and J. T. Clark, and apply said tax to the pur-
pose of cleaning out and removing the obstructions from
said river along the line of the lands so taxed as afore-
said.
2. The said board of supervisors shall have power tu
divide the lands so subject to taxation into districts, not
exceeding four in number, and to appoint, on the applica-
tion of a majority of the landholders in any of said dis-
tricts, a suitable person to act as overseer of river improve-
ment, who shall receive not exceeding one dollar and fifty
cents per day for each day’s actual service in superintend-
ing said improvements. The said overseer shall have the
powers of a collector of taxes in collecting the amount of
taxes levied under the provisions of this act: provided,
that any such Jandholder shal] have the option of paying
the amount of his tax in work, labor, and materials
upon said improvement, or in money, as he may think
proper.
3. Any person felling trees or putting any obstructions
in said river, and not removing the same within ten days
after due notice by the aforesaid overseer, shall pay a fine
of not less than one nor more than five dollars for each
and every offense, on conviction before a justice of the
peace.
4. This act shall be in force from its passage.
