CHAP. 597.—An ACT to incorporate the Young Men’s Christian
Association of Roanoke, Virginia.
Approved March 5, 1890
1. Beit enacted by the general assembly of Virginia,
That the following members of the Young Men’s Christian

Association of Roanoke, Virginia, namely: B. A. Jones,
D. W. Hess, W. E. Eutsler, W. S.. McClannahan, J. K.
Simmons, W. H. Clare, and Edmund Smith, and such
other persons as hereafter may become members of the
same, shall be, and are hereby, declared a body politic and
corporate by the name, style and tifle of the Young Men’s
Christian Association of Roanoke, Virginia; to have per-
petual succession, to have power to take, hold and dispose
of for the use of the said association any and all kinds of
property, real estate, goods, chattels, sum or sums of money
by gift, grant, bargain, sale or otherwise, from any person
or persone whomsoever capable of making the same, and
the same to grant. bargain, sell and a good conveyance to
make, for the use of the association aforesaid; to sue and
be sued, to contract and be contracted with, and to do all
other acts and enjoy all other privileges and powers inci-
dent to similar corporations in general, under and subject
to the laws of this commonwealth; but the members of
said association shall not be individually liable for the
corporate debts.
2. The amount of real estate held at any’ one time shall
not exceed five acres 1n area.
3. That the officers of said corporation shall be such as
the same association may think necessary, and shall be
elected by ballot at such time and in such manner as
the rules and by-laws may direct: provided, that no mem-
ber shall be entitled to vote other than a male member of
some evangelical church.
4. That the members of said association who are or who
may be entitled to vote at any such election of officers shall
have full power and authority to make such rules and
by-laws as shall be necessary for the government and pro-
motion of the interests of said association: provided, that
no rule or by-law shall be valid if inconsistent with this
act or the constitution or laws of the United States.
5. That the said association may make such alterations
or amendments to its rules and by-laws as it may deem
necessary: provided, that none of said alterations are con-
trary to the provisions herein contained.
6. That the following citizens of Roanoke shall constitute
the officers for one year beginning September twentieth,
eighteen hundred and eighty-nine: President, W. M. Gray-
bill; first vice-president, C. F. James; second vice-presi-
dent, R. K. Rice; treasurer, J. F. Boon; recording secre-
tary, J. S. Daddour.
7. This act shall be in force from its passage.
