Chap. 474.—An ACT to incorporate the Salem street railway
company.
Approved March 3, 1890.
1. Be it enacted by the general assembly of Virginia,
That A. M. Bowman, Thomas I. Preston, J. F. Christian,
Richard T. Styll, and Charles H. Cocke, and such others
as may hereafter be associated with them, be, and they are
hereby, constituted a body corporate under the name and
style of the Salem street railway company.
2. The said company shall have full authority to con-
struct, equip, maintain, and operate a street railway along
the streets of the town of Salem, in Roanoke county, hav-
ing first obtained the consent of the council of said town,
and may extend said railway to any point in the county
of Roanoke along the line of any of the public roads, hav-
ing first obtained the consent of the county court of said
county.
8. For the purpose of motive power the said company
may use horse, steam, electric, or cable power, as to it shall
seem best, with the authority to transport passengers,
freight, and baggage, and to collect fare and tolls for such
transportation. :
4. The capital stock of the company shall not be less
than ten thousand dollars nor more than two hundred
thousand dollars, and it may acquire real estate not to
exceed one thousand acres, and sell and convey the same.
5. 'The principal office of said company shall be located
in the town of Salem.
6. The company shall have authority to lease its road,
and to borrow money for the use of the corporation, and
may secure the same by bonds and one or more deeds of
trust upon all or any part of its estate, franchise, or in-
come.
7. The following named incorporators shall constitute
the. board of directors of the company, and, until their
successors are elected by the stockholders, shall manage
the affairs of the company—to wit: A. M. Bowman, Thomas
I. Preston, J. F. Christian, Charles H. Cocke, and Richard
T. Styll.
8. This charter is granted upon the condition that the
company aforesaid shall pay all taxes, levies, and dues, to
become due to the state of Virginia in lawful money of
the United States, and not in coupons.
9. This act shall be in force from its passage.
