CHAP. 100.—An ACT to authorize the Chesapeake and Ohio rail-
way company to construct, or acquire by purchase or otherwise,
and to maintain and op-rate and mortgage a branch of its rail-
road from any point on its lines east of the Blue Ridge moun-
tains to Alexandria or Quantico, or any other point on the
Potomac river, by such route as the company may select.

1. Be it enacted by the general assembly of Virginia,
That the Chesapeake and Ohio railway company be and
hereby is authorized and empowered to construct, or
acquire by purchase or otherwise, and to maintain and
operate as a branch of its road a railroad from any point
on its line east of the Blue Ridge mountains to Alexandria
or Quantico, or any other point on the Potomac river, by
such route as the company may select, and with the same
rights, franchises, and privileges to construct, maintain,
own, and operate and mortgage said branch railroad as
have heretofore been conferred upon said company, or the
companies to which it is successor, as to their main lines
or any branch thereof.
2. In case of the acquisition by purchase of the line of
railroad hereby authorized, the same may be upon such
terms as may be agreed upon between the contracting
parties, with the approval of a majority of their stock-
holders, but a copy of every such contract of purchase
shall be filed in the office of the board of public works.
3. Pending such purchase the Chesapeake and Ohio
railway company may hold stock in the company owning
such line of railway, and may lease, maintain, and operate
such line of railway upon such terms as may be agreed
upon between the contracting parties, with the approval
of a majority of their stockholders.
4. The Chesapeake and Ohio railway company may with
like approval guarantee the payment of the principal and
interest of any of the bonds of the company owning such
line.
5. That the said Chesapeake and Ohio railway company,
by the acceptance of this charter, agrees to pay all taxes,
dues, and demands due the state that may be hereafter
assessed against this branch road, or any road owned or
operated by said company within this state in lawful
money of the United States and not in coupons.
6. This act shall be in force from its passage.
