Chap. 67.—An ACT to incorporate High Point academy, Grayson
county.
Approved April 11, 1887.
1. Be it enacted by the gencral assembly of Virginia, That
Captain S. B. Carnett, C. V. Thomas, Reece Young, 8S. M.
Greer, and A. J. Greer, and such other persons as may be as-
sociated with them, be and they are hereby constituted a
body politic and corporate, by the name and style of The
Trustees of High Point Academy, in the county of Grayson,
and by that name shall have perpetual succession and a com-
mon seal, may sue and be sued, plead and be impleaded, with
power to purchase, receive, and hold to themselves and their
successors forever, any lands, tenements, rents, goods, and
chattels of what kind soever, which may be purchased by
them. or be devised, hequeathed, or given to them in any way
for the use of Hieh Point academy, and to lense, rent, sell, or
to otherwise dispose of the same, or any part thereof, i in such
manner as shall to them seem most conducive to the interest
of said academy: provided, that less than a majority of the
trustecs for the time being shall not be sufficient to authorize
the mortgage or sale of any real estate or other property be-
longing to “ead ae ademy: provided further, that the lands,
goods, “and chattels auphorized to be held by said trustees as
a body corporate for the benetit of said academy, shall not
exceed twenty thousand dollars in value.
2. The said trustees, and their successors, shall have power
to elect and appoint a principal teacher and assistant teachers,
and remove the same if found at any time to be ineflicient or
otherwise unfit to be retained ; to elect a treasurer, secretary,
and such other officers as they may deem proper; to make and
establish, from time to time, such by-laws, rules, and regula-
tions for their own government, and for properly conducting
a school of high rade at Hieh Point academy, in Grayson
county, not contrary to the Tew sof this State or of the laws
of the United States, and for properly enforcing the same, and
to modify, change, or repeal any of their rules and reculations
as they deem proper for the good government of said acade-
my. A majority of the entire board of trustees, at any time,
shall constitute a quorum tor the transaction of any business
not otherwise provided for; and any vacancy In the board of
trustees, causcd by resignation or otherwise, shall be filled by
appointment by the remaining members of the said board.
3. The treasurer shall receive all money accruing, and
property delivered to his care, and pay out or ‘deliver the same
upon tbe order of the board only. Betore he enters upon the
discharge of his dutics, he shall ceive bond of such amount,
with such security and in such penalty as the board may de-
termine, made payable to the trustees for the time being, and
their successors, and conditioned upon the faithful discharge
of his duties, under such rules and regulations as may be
adopted by the board.
4. The trustees, or any one of them, shall have the authority
to take subscriptions i in the name of the trustees for the use
and benefit of said academy, and the payment thereof’ shall
be subject to the laws of this State for the payment of any
other obligation and contract.
5. Be it enacted further, That the trustees of said academy
are hereby conservators of the peace, and invested with such
olice authority within the grounds of the said academy, and
or one mile distance therefrom, as is not inconsistent with tlte
Statutes of this commonwealth, while school is being taught
‘and school cxercises are being conducted in the said academy,
and until they be completed.
6. Be it further enacted, That the legislature reserves the
right to modify or repeal this charter at any time.
7. This act shall be in force from its passage.
