Chap. 347.—An ACT to incorporate the Sherwood Female Seminary
at Staunton, Virginia.
Approved May 21, 1887.
1. Beit enacted by the general assembly of Virginia, That
J. L. Massey, John E. Massey, William H. Kable, James Nel-
son, D. D., John B. Hoge, Henry E. Summerson, John W.
‘Todd, and their associates and successors, be and they are
hereby constituted a body politic and corporate under the
name and style of the Sherwood Female seminary, and by
that name shall have perpetual succession and a common
seal, sue and be sued, plead and be impleaded, purchase, re-
ceive, and hold, sell and dispose of any property, real and
personal, necessary and proper for the use and benefit of said
seminary, and under their common seal, make and establish
from time to time such rulesand by-laws not contrary to the
laws of Virginia, for the control and government of the pro-
fessors and students thereof, and for the conduct and main-
tenance of a female college or schodl.
2. The president of the said Sherwood Female seminary
shall have power and-authority to confer upon any student
or students he may deem worthy, the different scholastic de-
grees conferred by other colleges and seminaries, and may
award diplomas. ,
3. All rights, powers, privileges, exemption, and immuni-
ties secured by the laws of Virginia to like colleges or insti-
tutions, are also hereby granted to the said Sherwood Female
gominary, hereby incorporated, subject in all respects to the
laws of Virginia in such case made and provided.
4. This act shall be in force from its passage.
