Chap. 146.—An ACT to incorporate the Boydton Mutual Aid Benevo-
ent society.
Approved May 6, 1887.
1. Be it enacted by the general assembly of Virginia, That
William Henry Jones, Richard B. Baptist, Isham Wilkerson,
Aaron Baird, Jackson Slade, Cesar Rainey, Benjamin Lively,
Jesse Simmons, Leander Read, Alfred Read, Isham Basker-
ville, and all others who are now or may hereafter become
members of this socicty, be and they are hereby constituted
a body politic and corporate by the name and style of the
Boydton Mutual Aid Benevolent society of Virginia, and by
that name shall have perpetual succession and a common
seal,.may sue and be sued, plead and be impleaded, and in all
respects shall be invested with the rights and privileges con-
ferred, and subject to the restrictions and regulations pre-
scribed for corporations by the general laws 80 far as the
same are applicable to this corporation and not inconsistent
with this act. The said corporation may take by purchase,
gift, devise, or bequest, and hold real and personal estate, and
lease, rent, sell, or otherwise dispose of the same in such
manner as may seem most advantageous: ' provided it shall
not hold real estate exceeding ten acres of land, and personal
estate excecding five thousand dollars in value in any one
county in this commonwealth. The objects of the order shal}
be to help, aid, and assist its sick and destitute, and bury its
dead and take care of its widows and orphans, and generally
to cultivate and promote good conduct and correct living
among its members. The chief lodge of said corporation
shall be located at or within three miles of the town of Boyd-
ton, Mecklenburg county, Virginia. It may institute subor-
dinate lodyes in any part of said county, and in any other
county or corporate town in this commonwealth; and shall
have power to make and adopt a constitution and by-laws,
and rules and regulations for the admission and expulsion of
members, and for their government, the election of officers,
and to detine their dutics, and for the use, investment, safe-
keeping, and protection of its property, real and personal:
provided the same be not inconsistent with the laws of the
United States or this State.
2. This act shall be in force from its passage.
