Chap. 883.—An ACT to authorize the Petersburg railroad company to
lease its road.
Approved March 2, 1888.
1. Be it enacted by the general assembly of Virginia, That |
it shall be lawful for the Petersburg railroad company to ;
lease to any railroad company chartered by the states of Vir-
ginia or North Carolina, with which it is now physically con-
nected as a continuous line, all of its own line of railroad ex-
tending from the city of Petersburg, in the state of Virginia,
to the town of Weldon, in the state of North Carolina, being
about sixty-four miles in length, together with its rolling
stock and other equipments, real and personal property, cor-
porate powers, and franchises now held, owned, or used by
the said Petersburg railroad company, in connection with, or
relating to the maintenance, use, and operation of its own
line, except the franchise to be a corporation. And the com-
pany or companies with whom it may make such contract as
is hereby authorized, are in like manner hereby empowered
to make and carry out the same: provided however, that
such contract or lease of its road and franchises by the Pe-
tersburg railroad company as is hereby authorized, shall not
release or exempt said company or its property from any du-
ties, liabilities, or restrictions to which it would otherwise be
subject: and provided further, that if any corporation of
North Carolina, shall lease the railroad property and fran-
chises of the Petersburg railroad company, pursuant to the
provisions of this act, such North Carolina corporation shall
ipso facto become, so far as concerns its control and opera-
tion of such works and property in this state,'a corporation
of this state.
2. This act shall be subject to alteration, amendment, or
repeal, at the pleasure of the general assembly.
3. All taxes, dues, and demands due the state, shall be’
paid in lawful money of the United States, and not in cou-
ons.
