Chap. 488.—An ACT to change the boundary lines between the coun-
ties of Rockbridge and Botetourt, south of James river, and to
transfer a small portion of Botetourt to Rockbridge county.
Approved March 65, 1888.
1. Be it enacted by the general assembly of Virginia, That
the dividing line between the counties of Rockbridge and
Botetourt, south of James river, be and the same is hereby
changed, and hereafter declared to be as follows: Beginning
in the present county line between said counties, upon the.
southern bank of James river at low-water mark, upon the

lands of J nepn Gilmore’s heirs; thence by new lines up said
river along the southern margin thereof at low-water mark,
with meanderings of said stream, a distance of one mile and
one-fifth of a mile; thence by a new line parallel to the
peste line between said counties, to a point in the present
ine between Botetourt and Bedford counties.
2. The territory and portion of Botetourt county cut off:
from said county by the new lines designated by this act, is’
hereby transferred to the county of Rockbridge, and shall
hereafter form a part of Rockbridge county and of the
Natural magisterial district thereof.
3. The treasurer of Botetourt county and his deputies,
shall have the right to collect any unpaid taxes heretofore
assessed in said portion of Botetourt county hereby trans-
ferred to Rockbridge, by distress or levy as though this act
had not been passed, but the lands and personal property
embraced, and the persons residing therein, shall be assessed
for taxation in Rockbridge county for the year eighteen hun-
dred and eighty-eight.
4. The county surveyors of said counties, shall so soon as’
practicable after the passage of this act, make a careful sur-
vey of the new lines hereby established between said coun-
ties, and cause the same to be plainly designated and marked
by permanent monuments at all important corners, and else-
where by plain and repeated marks on trees and other natu-
ral objects along and near the line. They will make three |
reports and plats of said survey, showing the territory trans- |
ferred to Rockbridge, one of which reports they will file in
the clerk’s office of Rockbridge, and one in the clerk’s office
of Botetourt county, and one they will forward to the regis-
ter of the land office at Richmond, and the said clerks and
register will cause said reports, survey, and plat to be
recorded in their respective offices. The cost of making said
survey and reports and plats shall be borne and paid one-
half by the county of Rockbridge, and one-half by the county
of Botetourt.
