Chap. 345.—An ACT to amend the eighth section of an act to incor
porate the James river bridge company.
Approved March 2, 1888.
1. Be it enacted by the general assembly of Virginia, Tha:
the eighth section of an act entitled an act to incorporat
the James river bridge company, approved fifth day of No
vember, eighteen hundred and sixty-nine, be amended and
re-enacted so as to read as follows:
§ 8. If any person shall ride or drive on or over said
bridge at any gait faster than a walk, the person so offending
shall torfeit five dollars, to be recovered with costs, upon
proper evidence before the police justice of the city of Rich-
mond: provided however, that the commissioners in charge
of said bridge may, by proper resolutions, prescribe at what
speed certain vehicles, carriages or cars may be drawn 01
propelled, which, by their construction, may in their opinion
be allowed to go over said bridge at a greater speed than
walk, after a careful inspection of said bridge; and said com
missioners may also have power, by proper resolutions, tc
grant to any person or corporation the right to use any mo
tive power, by said commissioners deemed advisable, for the
movement of cars or vehicles over said bridge not in conflict
with any vested rights, and to make regulations as to th«
right of way which certain carriages, vehicles or cars may
have over other carriages, vehicles or cars; and for violations
of such regulations, which shall be conspicuously posted as
notices to the public, a fine not exceeding ten dollars shal
attach and be enforced and collected before said police justice
of the city of Richmond.
2. This act shall be in force from its passage.
