Chap. 166.—An ACT; to require the county judge of Greensville
county to submit the question of continuing or repealing the fence
law, to the qualified voters of Belfield magisterial district, in said
county, upon certain conditions.
Approved February 28, 1888.
1. Be it enacted by the general assembly of Virginia, That
it shall be the duty of the judge of the county court of
Greensville county, upon the petition of fifty of the qualified
voters, in writing, from said Belfield magisterial district, in
Greensville county (which petition may be presented either
in term time or vacation), to order the several officers con-
ducting elections in such magisterial districts, from which
such petition may have been received by said judge as afore-
said, at the time of, and places for holding the first election
for county or district officers, to prepare a separate ballot-box
for each voting precinct in said Belfield magisterial district,
in which shall be deposited the ballots of the then qualified
voters who shall desire to vote upon the question of continu-
ing or repealing the present fence law in said district. The
said ballots shall be respectively as follows: “for present fence
law,” “against present fence law”: provided that notice shall
be given by the sheriff, by posting the time and places of voting
at the front door of the courthouse of such county, and at
each voting precinct of such magisterial district as aforesaid,
and by publication in some newspaper, published in or as near
to the said county as possible, at least thirty days prior to
said election.
2. The manner of receiving and canvassing the ballots
cast at such election, on said question, and making returns
and abstracts of the result thereof, shall conform in all re-
spects to the requirements of the general election law of this
state, except that the certificates of the judges of election
shall be as follows: We hereby certify that at the election
held, votes were cast for present fence law, and votes
were cast against present fence law.

3. If from such returns and abstracts of votes, so cast on
the question aforesaid, it shall appear that a majority of the
qualified voters of such magisterial district, voting upon the
question aforesaid, are in favor of repealing the present fence
law in said district, then it shall be the duty of the county
court to declare all acts or orders creating or defining a fence
law in said district, repealed and rescinded.
4. This act shall be in force from its passage.
