Chap. 131.—An ACT to incorporate the Samaritan Beneficial Society.
Approved February 14, 1888.
1. Be it enacted by the general assembly of Virginia, That
J. H. Reid, W. T. Crowder, D. F. Batts, J. H. Furguson, J.
M. Clark, M. W. Marton, R. J. Satchell, J. P. Tate, R. G.
Griffin, M. E. Smith, J. W. Thompson, and their associates
and successors, be and they hereby are constituted and made
a body corporate and politic by the name and style of the
Samaritan Beneficial society; and by that name may sue and
be sued, plead and be impleaded, have perpetual succession
and a common seal, and in all respects shall be invested with
all the rights and privileges conferred, and subject to the

restrictions prescribed for corporations by the general law o:
the stato of Virginia.
2. The capital stock of said society shall not be less thar
five thousand dollars, divided into shares of ten dollars each.
nor more than twenty-five thousand dollars.
3. The object of the said society is to provide for its mem
bers in case of sickness or death, such sums of money as wil
aid them and their families or kindred.
4. The said society may elect from among its shareholders
a president, secretary, and treasurer, and a board of directors
consisting of five; and the said board shall have power from
time to time to make such by-laws, rules, and regulations, as
will best carry out the object of the said society.
5. The first five persons named in this act, shall constitute
the first board of directors, who shall serve for the period of
one year.
6. The real and personal property of the society shall be
liable to taxation in the same manner and to the same extent
as the property of an individual, to be paid in lawful money
of the United States, and not in coupons.
7. This act shall be in torce from its passage.
