CHAP. 437.—An ACT to provide the manner in which the common
council of the city of Petersburg may purchase the Virginia and
Carolina railroad, to the extent of the claim of said city against said
road, or sell or dispose of the claim of said city against said road.
Approved March 6, 1886.
1. Beit enacted by the general assembly of Virginia, That
the city of Petersburg be and it is hereby authorized to pur-
chase, through the common council of said city, at public or
private sale, the Virginia and Carolina railroad to the extent of
its claim of one hundred and fifty thousand dollars, and accrued
interest thereon, against said Virginia and Carolina railroad:
provided, that before any purchase of the said Virginia and
Carolina railroad, on sale or disposal of the claim of the city of
Petersburg against said road, by the common council of said
city, shall become valid or binding, the said purchase, sale or
disposal above-mentioned shall be ratified by a majority of the
qualified voters of said city, voting at a special election to be
held for that purpose, which election shall be ordered by the
judge of the hustings or corporation court, upon the application
of fifty actual residents of said city. Notice of the day fixed
for which election shall be given at least thirty days prior
thereto, by publication in the Index-Appeal, or some other
daily newspaper published in the city of Petersburg: provided,
that the day for holding such election shall not be deferred by
the court for a period longer than forty days from the time that
the application was first filed with the judge of the court.
_ 2, All acts and parts of acts inconsistent or in conflict here-
with be and the same are hereby repealed.
3. This act shall be in force from its passage.
