Chap. 402.—An ACT to confirm the charter of the Richmond Ex-
change for woman’s work.
Approved March 3, 1886.
Whereas the circuit court of the city of Richmond, on Feb-
ruary twelfth, eighteen hundered and eighty-five, granted a
charter which was recorded in the office of the secretary of the
commonwealth, on February fourteenth, eighteen hundred and
eighty-five, in the following words and figures:
CHARTER OF THE RICHMOND EXCHANGE FOR WOMAN'S WORK.
To the judge of the circuit court of the city of Richmond:
The undersigned certify that they desire to form a joint-stock
company, under the name of Richmond Exchange for woman’s
work.
Purposes for which it is formed.—To aid ladies whose pecu-
niary circumstances require them to make their own handiwork
a means of support, and also to afford an opportunity by which
work may be sold for charitable purposes.
Capital stock, minimum, five thousand dollars; maximum,
one hundred thousand dollars; or being purely benevolent it
may be only nominal. Shares to be in sums of twenty-five
dollars.
Amount of real estate proposed to be held—not over one acre.
Place of its principal office—city of Richmond, Virginia.
Chief business to be transacted—to carry out the purposes
for which it is formed, by sales and otherwise.
Names and residences of officers for the first year: president,
Mrs. S. H. Hawes, Richmond, Virginia; vice-president, Mrs.
J. S. Wellford, Richmond, Virginia; recording secretary, Mrs.
W. T. Richardson, Richmond, Virginia; corresponding secre-

I, W. W. Henry, junior, a notary public in and for the said
city and state, do certify that Jno. B. Cary, Thomas Potts, R.
W. Powers, Wm. W. Parker, M. D.,and James Lyons, whose
names are signed to the foregoing certificate and application
for a charter, have acknowledged the same before me in my city
aforesaid. ‘

dred and eighty-five.

Vircinia:—In the circuit court of the city of Richmond,
February twelfth, eighteen hundred and eighty-five: It ap-
pearing to the court that John B. Cary, Thomas Potts, R. W.
Powers, Wm. W. Parker and James Lyons, have made, signed
and acknowledged, according to law, a certificate in writing,
having for its object the formation of a joint-stock company,
for the purposes set forth in said certificate, the court doth
grant unto them, and. such others as may hereafter be asso-
ciated with them, a charter, upon the terms set forth in said
certificate; and it is ordered that they and their associates be
and are hereby made and created a body corporate and politic,
by the name of the Richmond Exchange for woman’s work,
with all the powers and privileges conferred, and subject to all
the provisions and restrictions imposed by the laws of Virginia,
as may be applicable to corporations of this character. And
it is ordered that the same be recorded.

And whereas it is deemed advisable that the said charter
should be confirmed by the general assembly, therefore, be it
enacted by the general assembly of Virginia, that the said
charter be of the same force and effect as though it had been
originally enacted by the general assembly of Virginia, and the
said Richmond Exchange for woman’s work shall be a body
corporate, having all the privileges and subject to all the regu-
lations existing and applicable to such corporations.
2. And be it further enacted, that all the acts heretofore done
by the said Richmond Exchange for woman’s work, not for-
bidden by the laws relating to such corporations, shall be as
valid and binding as though done subsequent to the passage
of this act.
3. This act shall be in force from its passage.
