Chap. 376.—An ACT to authorize the voters of Pittsylvania county,
to vote for or against the repeal of the present iaNICe law, by magis-
terial districts.
Approved March 3, 1886.
1. Be it enacted by the general assembly of Virginia, That
it shall be the duty of the judge of the county court of Pittsyl-
vania, upon the petition, in writing, of three hundred qualified
voters, one-half of whom shall be freeholders, whose names
shall be written or verified, in any magisterial district in said
county, which petition may be presented, either in term or va-
cation, to order a special election in such district or districts,
upon the question of repealing the present fence law in force in
said county, as provided in an act as passed January twenty-
sixth, eighteen hundred and sixty-six, and adopted by the
county court of Pittsylvania county, at its December term,
eighteen hundred and sixty-seven. The said judge shall,
within ten days after the receipt of said petition, certify the fact
to the sheriff of said county, whose duty it shall .be to forth-
with post, at each voting precinct in said district or districts,
notice of said election, and also to. give notice to the officers
charged with the duty of conducting elections in said district
or districts, and also to publish the same in some local newspa-
per not less than one month prior to the day of said election.
2. Said special election shall be held and conducted as elec-
tions are held and conducted for other purposes, except that
the ballots to be used in said special elections shall be respec-
tively as follows: “For the repeal of the present fence law.”’
‘Against the repeal of the present fence law.”
3. The manner of receiving and canvassing the ballots at
said election on said question, and making returns and ab-
stracts thereof, shall conform in all respects to the require-
ments of the general election law of the state, except that the
certificate of the judges shall be as follows:
We hereby certify, that at the election held
votes were cast for the repeal of the present fence law, and
votes were cast against the repeal of the present fence
law.

If it appears from the abstracts and returns of any such elec-
tion in said district or districts, that a majority of said votes
have been cast for the repeal of the present fence law, then the
present. fence shall be repealed in said district or districts, as
of the first day of January succeeding such election. If it shall
appear from the abstracts and returns of any such election in
said district or districts, that a majority of votes have been cast
against the repeal of the present fence law, then the present
fence law shall remain in force in said district or districts; and
in either case, the judge of said county court shall declare the
result of said election.
-4. All acts and parts of acts inconsistent with this act are
hereby repealed.
5. This act shall be in force from its passage.
