CHAP. 295.—An ACT to incorporate the St. Paul Fountain No. 8,
United Order of True Reformers.
Approved March 1, 1886.
Whereas, there has existed for some time past in the county
of Chesterfield an association of persons known as St. Paul
Fountain No. Eight, United Order of True Reformers, the
purposes and objects of which are solely benevolent and chari-
table; and to enable said association to more effectually carry
out the purposes of their organization, an act of incorporation
is desired: therefore,
1. Be it enacted by the general assembly of Virginia, That
Rev. J. E. Brown, Ro. I. Clarke, James Cheatham, Lycurgus
Lively, Robert Randall and Edward Wilson, and such other
persons as are now or may hereafter become members of the
order, be and they are hereby made a body politic and corpo-
rate, by the name and style of St. Paul Fountain No. Eight,
United Order of True Reformers, and by that name may sue
and be sued, plead and be impleaded, in all the courts of the
commonwealth.
2. The said order being for benevolent purposes, they shall
have power to appoint five persons, who are members of their
order, trustees, which power shall be to receive, hold posses-
sion of such property, real and personal, as may be necessary
for the use of their order; and may rent, sell, convey, encum-
ber, and otherwise manage or dispose of the same, in such man-
ner as they shall be required by a vote of the majority of the
members of said order, in regular meeting assembled.
3. The object of this corporation shall be to take care of its
sick and destitute members, to bury its dead, to provide a fund
for the relief of widows, orphans, or the beneficiaries of a de-
ceased member of said order; to encourage and promote good
morals, knowledge among its members and their families, such
other benevolent objects as the order may decree fit and pro-
per to promote the interests of its members.
4. The said corporation shall have power to make and adopt
a constitution and by-laws, rules and regulations, for the admis-
sion and expulsion of its members, and their government; the
election of its officers, and to define their duties, and for the
safe-keeping of its property and funds; and from time to time
to alter or repeal such constitution, by-laws and regulations:
provided, the same be not inconsistent with the constitution and
laws of the United States or the state of Virginia.
5. The said order shall have and hold real and personal es-
tate, as may be suitable for its objects, not to exceed the value
of three thousand dollars.
6. And the said order having heretofore purchased of Snead
and Stebbins four acres of land, with its appurtenances, for the
sum of six hundred dollars, as shown by their deed to certain
trustees of said order, of record in the clerk’s office of Chester-
field county court, and upon which property the said order, by
their said trustees, having executed a deed of trust to secure
the balance of purchase monev for said four acres of land and
its appurtenances, the said conveyance to said trustees to secure
the purchase money as aforesaid, and all transactions of said
trustees in regard to the same, are hereby declared valid, and
of full virtue and effect.
7. The said order, at any meeting called for the purpose,
shall have power to remove any or all trustees for said order,
or to fill all vacancies, to be chosen from the membership of
said order.
8. Whenever the said order from any cause cease to exist,
the said members of the order, or a majority of them, in good
standing, shall have authority to sell and convey the land and
other property held by them for the use of their order, and dis-
tribute the money arising from such sale, and any other money
belonging to said order, ratably among the members in good
standing at the time the said order ceased to exist.
g. Its principal office shall be in Chesterfield county, and the
officers of said order shall be a worthy master, worthy mistress,
past master, treasurer, secretary, assistant secretary, sentinel,
guide, and five trustees, whose terms of office shall be one year,
or as provided in the constitution of said order.
10. Five members of the order shall constitute a quorum for
the transaction of any business under this act.
11. This act shall be in force from its passage.
