Chap. 29.—An ACT to incorporate the Hines Memorial Association of
the Knights of Pythias.
Approved January 16, 1886.
1. Be it enacted by the general assembly of Virginia, That
William Lovenstein, William C. Carrington, Beverly T. Crump,
John ©. Teller, T. L. Courtney, James Johnston, J. W. Wi.
liams, August Blenner, A. A. Bradley, D. Richardson, T. J.
Payne, J. A. Cosby, R. N. Northen, and John Maxwell, of the
city of Richmond; D. J. Turner and W. A. Edwards, of the
city of Norfolk; E. A. Emerson, of the city of Lynchburg; F.
A. Owens, of the city of Petersburg; L. A. Marbury, of Alex-
andria ; George M. Richter, of Hampton; and J. H. Alexander,
of Leesburg, and such other persons as are now or may here-
after be associated with them, and their successors, be and they
are hereby constituted a body politic and corporate, under the
corporate name and style of the Hines Memorial Association of
the Knights of Pythias; and by that name shall have perpetual
succession and a common seal; and may sue and be sued; plead
and be impleaded ; and in all respects shall be invested with
the rights and privileges conferred, and subject to the restric-
tions imposed by the general law relating to corporations, so
far as the same is applicable to this corporation, and not incon-
sistent with this act.
2. The purpose of the said corporation shall be to erect a
hall, building, monument, or other testimonial to the memory
of Samuel Holder Hines, deceased; and it is authorized and
empowered to devise and adopt proper and legal means for
raising funds in execution of its said purpose.
3. The said association shall have power to take by purchase,
legacy, devise, gift or otherwise, real and personal property,
not exceeding sity thousand dollars in value, and the same to
hold, transfer, grant and convey, as its purpose may require;
but all such property, real or personal, belonging to, received,
or acquired by said association, and all proceeds of any sale
thereof, shall be devoted exclusively to the purposes of its in-
corporation: and provided it shall not hold real estata exceed-
ing five acres of land. |
4. The estate, property, business, and affairs of said associa-
tion shall be managed and controlled in such manner as a
majority of its members may provide; and the said association
may delegate all powers conferred by this act to a board of
managers, or such other agents as may be selected at any duly
organized meeting.
d. All taxes, debts and demands, due from the said company
to the state of Virginia, shall be paid in currency, and not in
coupons.
5. This act shall be in force from its passage.
