Chap. 238.—An ACT to define and punish champerty.
Approved February 26, 1886.
1. Be it enacted by the general assembly of Virginia, That
any person who shall solicit, procure, or induce, or become a
party to soliciting, procuring or inducing any suit or action to
be brought, any petition to be filed or any motion to be made
against the state of Virginia, or any citizen thereof, by verbal
representation, or by writing or printing, shall be deemed
ilty of the offence of champerty, and upon conviction thereof
shall be adjudged guilty of a misdemeanor, and shall be pun-
ished by a fine of not less than one hundred nor more than
three hundred dollars for each offence, or by imprisonment for
not more than sixty days, or by both, in the discretion of the
jury.
2. This act shall be in force from its passage.
