Chap. 220.—An ACT to incorporate Alleghany Institute.
Approved February 24, 1886.
1. Be it enacted by the general assembly of Virginia, That
Charles L. Cocke, Walter N. Johnston, Michael Graybill,
George Swann, Gabriel Gray, George W. Beale, John M. Evans,
Cornelius Tyree, Lucian H. Cocke, William G. Evans, John
H. Johnston, J. L. Stearns, CHarles J. Matthews, M. A. Wil-
son, and John W. Easley, and such other persons as may here-
after be associated with them, and their successors, be and they
are hereby constituted a body corporate by the name and style
of the Trustees of Alleghany Institute, for the purpose of con-
ducting a high seminary of learning in this state, at such point
west of the Blue Ridge mountains and south of James river as
they may select, to be known as Alleghany Institute; and shall
have perpetual succession and a common seal, sue and be
sued, plead and be impleaded; the corporation at no time to
consist of less than thirteen nor more than twenty-one persons.
2. The said corporation shall have power to acquire by pur-
chase, gift, devise, or bequest, property real and personal, and
may hold, manage, control; sell, convey, or dispose of said
property solely for the benefit of Alleghany Institute: provided
the value thereof shall not exceed at any time one hundred
thousand dollars; and provided, further, that a majority of all
the trustees shall vote affirmatively on any proposition for the
mortgage or sale of said real estate.
3. The said corporation shall have power to make and
adopt, alter or amend by-laws, rules, and regulations not con-
trary to the laws of this commonwealth, for the admission and
expulsion of members, and for the government of the said
Alleghany Institute; may appoint professors and other officers,
and prescribe their duties and their remuneration, and confer
literary titles and honors.
4. This act shall be in force from its passage.
