Chap. 83.—An ACT to amend and re-enact section 6 of chapter 80 of
the Code of 18738, in reference to the powers and duties of the board
of Visitors to the University of Virginia, and confirm certain pro-
ceedings of said board heretofore had for the condemnation and pur-
chase of land.

1. Be it enacted by the general assembly of Virginia, That
section six of chapter eighty of the Code of eighteen hun-
dred and seventy-three, be amended and re-enacted so as to
read as follows:
§6. The said board shall be charged with the care and
reservation of all the property belonging to the University.
hey shall appoint as many professors as they deem proper,
and with the assent of two-thirds of the whole number of
the visitors, may remove any professor. They may prescribe
the duties of each professor and the course and mode of in-
struction. They may appoint a bursar and proctor, and
employ any other agents or servants, regulate the govern-
ment and discipline of the students, and the renting of the
hotels and dormitories, and generally in respect to the gov-
ernment and management of the University, make such regu-
lations as they may deem expedient, not being contrary to
law. ‘To enable the rector and visitors of the University to
procure a supply of water, and to construct and maintain a
system of water-works, drainage, and sewerage for the
University, they shall have authority to acquire such
springs, lands, and rights of way as may be necessary, accord-
ing to the provisions of chapter fifty-six of the Code of Vir-
ginia, edition of eighteen hundred and seventy-three.
2. All proceedings heretofore had before any court or in
any clerk’s office, and all contracts heretofore entered into
for acquiring land by condemnation or purchase, for any of
the purposes mentioned in the preceding section, are hereby
confirmed and made valid.
3. This act shall be in force from its passage.
