Chap. 63.—An ACT to provide the manner in which the Neison Im-
provement Company may obtain a license to operate its telephone,
and fix the amount to be paid therefor.
Approved November 22, 1884.
Whereas by an act approved March fourth, eighteen hun-
dred and eighty-four, a charter.of incorporation was granted
to the Nelson improvement company, and said company
authorized to construct, maintain and operate telephone lines
in the county of Nelson; and whereas the said company has
constructed a telephone line from Lovingston to Nelson sta-
tion, a depot on the Virginia Midland railway, in the said
county, and is ready to operate the same; and whercas the
said company declines to operate its said line and send mes-
sages over its wire for compensation because the business of
the company will not justify it in so doing owing to the
heavy license tax imposed by the twenty-fourth section of
chapter four hundred and fifty of the Acts of eighteen hun-
dred and eighty-three and four, approved March fifteenth,
eighteen hundred and eighty-four, which license tax it is
estimated will amount to almost as much as the gross earnings
of the said company; therefore,
1. Be it enacted by the general assembly of: Virginia, That
it may be lawful for the said Nelson improvement company
to obtain a license to operate its telephone and conduct its
business, and charge and receive compensation for messages
sent over its wire, upon the payment of the sum of thirty
dollars and such taxes as are imposed on its property and
earnings, according to the provisions of the said twenty-fourth
section of the said act, approved March fifteenth, eighteen
hundred and eighty-four, the assessment to be made and the
license granted in accordance with the provisions of law now
in force.
2. This act shall be in force from its passage.
