Chap. 27.—An ACT to authorize the Auditor of Public Accounts to
pay to the Western Lunatic Asylum, the additional sum of $16,500,
to meet the expenses for the fiscal year ending September 30, 1884.
Approved August 27, 1884.
Whereas it has been represented to the general assembly,
that the board of visitors of the Western lunatic asylum, who
went out of office on the fifteenth day of April eighteen hun-
dred and eighty-four, had expended about seventy-five thou-
sand dollars of the ninety thousand appropriated for the
expenses of said asylum, for the fiscal year commencing on
the first of October eighteen hundred and eighty-three, and
in addition thereto, the greater part of the money received
from pay patients, so that when the present board of visitors
took charge of the said asylum, on the fifteenth of April
eighteen hundred and eighty-four, there remained only about
fifteen thousand dollars to defray the expenses of the asylum
from that date to the end of the fiscal year, which amount is
wholly inadequate for the purpose; and whereas it is neces-
sary to make some provisions for the necessary expenses of
said asylum, for the present fiscal year, and the governor has
recommended that the sum of thirty thousand dollars be
appropriated for this purpose; therefore,
1. Be it enacted by the general assembly of Virginia, That
the auditor of public accounts is hereby authorized and
directed to pay out of any. money in the treasury not other-
wise appropriated to the Western lunatic asylum, the sum of
sixteen thousand five hundred dollars, to meet expenses for the
fiscal year ending September thirtieth, eighteen hundred and
eighty-four, which sum shall be in addition to the amount
heretofore appropriated for that purpose, of which sum six-
teen thousand two hundred and fifty dollars shall be applied
to the covering of the deficiency in current revenue, and the
remainder to be used only for repair and permanent improve-
ment.
2. This act shall be in force from its passage.
