Chap. 197.—An AOT to incorporate the Association of Sons and Daugh-
ters of Honor and Liberty, of Lunenburg county, Virginia.
Approved December 1, 1884.
1. Be it enacted by the general assembly of Virginia, That
Freman F. Jennings, Clem Stokes, John Fowlks, Sarah Stokes,
Martha Blackwell, Bettie Stokes, Patsey Street, Dinah Stokes,
Bettie Williams, Veni Scott, Jennie Stokes, Frankie Bayley,
Willie Stokes, Harriett Burke, Hall Brown, Sam Stokes, Alex-
ander Jennings, Alexander Bailey, Robert Stokes, Ashley
Bayley, George Stokes, Henry Hurt, Ned Stokes, and such
other persons as may hereafter be associated with them, and
their successors, shall be and they are hereby constituted a
body politic and corporate, under the name and style of the
Sons and Daughters of Honour and Liberty, and shall have
their chief office in Lunenburg county, Virginia.
2. The objects of said corporation shall be the mutual aid
and assistance to its members in time of sickness, and the
burying of deceased members. |
3. The said association may have a common seal, may con-
tract and be contracted with, sue and be sued, plead and be
impleaded; may acquire, receive, hold, possess, and purchase
such real and personal estate as may be necessary for their
purposes, not exceeding five acres of land in Lunenburg
county, Virginia; and may sell, convey, invest, and otherwise
manage and dispose of any property acquired under this act
as may best promote the benevolent purposes of this associa-
tion.
4. The association shall have the right to make such by-
laws as may be necessary to promote and carry out the pur-
poses of this association, and may amend the same at pleasure.
5. The officers of this association shall be, for the first year,
Freeman F. Jennings, president ; Clem Stokes, vice-president;
John Fowlkes, secretary.
6. After the first year the association shall have the right
to elect annually their officers, who’ shall hold office one year
from the date of their election, and may make rules and regu-
lations for the admission and expulsion of its members, and
define the duties of its officers, and make rules and regula-
tions for the improvement, safe-keeping, and protection of its
property and funds: provided, they be not inconsistent with
the constitution of this state and the United States. »
