Chap. 145.—An ACT to amend an act entitled an act to incorporate
the Grand Lodge of the Sons of Zion Benevolent Society of Virginia,
approved February 9, 1882.
Approved November 27, 1884.
1. Be it enacted by the general assembly of Virginia, That
the act incorporating the Grand Lodge of the Sons of Zion
Benevolent Society of Virginia, approved February the ninth,
eighteen hundred and eighty-two, be amended and re-enacted
so as to read as follows:
§1. Be it enacted by the general assembly of Virginia,
That Crocket Johnson, Philip Seals, Hiram Mills, Granville
Savage, Lilbum Brown, James Guy, James Coleman, and all
others who are now, or may hereafter become. members of
this society, be and they are hereby constituted a body
poritic and corporate, by the name and style of the Grand
odge of the Sons and Daughters of Zion Benevolent Society
of Virginia, and by that name shall have perpetual succession
and a common seal; may sue and be sued, plead and be im-
pleaded, and in all respects shall be invested with the rights
and privileges conferred, and subject to the restrictions and
regulations prescribed for corporations by the general law,
so far as the same are applicable to this corporation, and
not inconsistant with this act. The corporation may take by
purchase, gift, devise or bequest, and hold real and personal
estate, and lease, rent, sell, or otherwise dispose of the same
in such manner a8 may seem most advantageous: provided
it shall not hold real estate exceeding five acres of land, and
personal estate exceeding five thousand dollars in value, in
any county in this commonwealth. The objects of the order
shall be to help, aid, and assist its sick and destitute, to bury
its dead and take care of its widows and orphans, and gene-
rally to cultivate and promote good conduct and correct liv-
ng among its members. The said corporation may institute
subordinate lodges in any county or corporation in this com-
monwealth, and shall have power to make and adopt a con-
stitution and by-laws, and rules and regulations for the expul-
sion of its members, and for their government, the election
of officers, and to define their duties, and for the use, invest-
ment, safe-keeping, and protection of its property, real and
personal provided the same be not inconsistent with the
aws of the United States or this state.
2. This act shall be in force from its passage.
