Chap. 13.—An ACT to provide for the appointment of electors for
President and Vice-President of the United States by election by the
people.
Approved Angust 23, 1884.
1. Be it enacted by the general assembly of Virginia, That
there shall be chosen by the qualified voters of the common-
wealth at the election to be held on the Tuesday after the
first Monday in November, eighteen hundred and eighty-four,
and at elections to be held on the Tuesday after the first
Monday in November in each fourth year thereafter, so many
electors for president and vice-president of the United States
as this state shall be entitled to at the time of such election
under the constitution and laws of the United States. Said
elections shall be held and conducted under the penalties
subject to the regulations and provisions of, and the returns
thereof shall be made in accordance with, the general election
law of this state at the time such election shall be held. Each
voter may vote for one elector from each congressional dis-
trict of the state, as the same shall be constituted and appor-
tioned for the election of representatives in the congress of
the United States from this state at the time when such
election shall be held, and for two electors from the state at
large; and if at tho time of choosing electors the law shall
rovide for one or more representatives from the state at
arge in said congress, then in that event each voter may at
such election vote for such number of electors from the state
at large (in addition to the two hereinbefore provided for)
as shall correspond with the number of such representatives
at large, so that the whole number of electors to be chosen at
any election shall always be equal to the whole number of |
senators and representatives to which the state may at that
time be entitled in the congress aforesaid.
2. Sections six, seven, and eight of chapter five of the Code
of Virginia, edition of eighteen hundred and seventy-three,
and chapters three hundred and forty-four and three hundred
and ninety-one of the Acts of the general assembly of Vir-
ginia, session of eighteen hundred and seventy-one and eigh-
teen hundred and seventy-two, and all acts and parts of acts
inconsistent with this act are hereby repealed.
3. This act shall be in force from its passage.
