Chap. 555.—An ACT to incorporate the Star of the West Lodge, No.
1433, Grand United Order of Odd-Fellows, of the town of Hampton.
Approved March 19, 1884.
Whereas there is established in the town of Hampton, in
the state of Virginia, a benevolent institution known as the
Star of the West lodge, number fourteen bundred and thirty-
three, of the Grand United Order of Odd-Fellows, which has
for its objects mutual aid and assistance of its members in
time of sickness, and burial of deceased members, the support
of their widows, and the education of their orphans; and
whereas it is believed that the facilities of the said institution
for the accomplishment of its benevolent purposes would be
greatly promoted by an act of incorporation of the trustces
of the said Star of the West lodge ; therefore,
1. Be it enacted by the general assembly ot Virginia, That
James Mallory, John Roberts, Joseph Williams, Norfleet C.
Barnes, George W. Greenhow, Jere M. Simpson, Arthur
Simpkins, Henry Harris, John C. Davis, and their successors,
be and they are hereby appointed a body politic and corpo-
rate, by the name and style of the Star of the West Lodge,
number fourteen hundred and thirty-three, of the town of
Hampton, and by that name shall have perpetual succession
and a common seal; may contract and be contracted with,
sue and be sued; may acquire and receive, hold, possess and
enjoy, and may rent, sell, convey, invest and otherwise man-
age and dispose of, as to ‘them may seem most conducive of
the interest and promotion of the benevolent purposes of
the said Star of the West lodge, number fourteen hundred
and thirty-three, of the Grand United Order of Odd-Fellows,
of the town of Hampton, of all lands, money, or other pro-
perty, real or personal, which may have been, or may here-
after be given or otherwise acquired for the use of the said
Star of the West lodge, number fourteen hundred and thirty-
three, of the Grand United Order of Odd- Fellows, of the
town of Hampton; and the said trustees and their successors
shall hold office as trustees, no longer than they remain mem-
bers of the said Star of the West lodge, or until their succes-
sors enter upon the discharge of their duties as trustees: pro-
vided that the said Star of the West lodge shall not acquire
or hold at any one time a sum of money in excess of twenty
thousand dollars, nor a quantity of land exceeding one-half
of an acre, to be situated in the said town of Hampton.
2. The trustees herein named shall continue to act as such,
until their successors are duly elected and enter upon the
discharge of their duties as trustees,
3. The trustees, nine in number, and such other officers as
may be required by its laws, shall be elected according to the
rules and laws of the said Star of the West lodge, number
fourteen hundred and thirty-three, of the Grand United Or-
der of Odd-Fellows, of the town of Hampton, and the said
Star of the West lodge shall exact from any of thf said
officers such bonds or other security, and in such penalty as
the trustees shall direct, conditioned for the faithful discharge
of their duties; and the bonds of the secretary and treasurer
of said lodge, and of other officers of whom’ bonds may be
required, may be made payable to said trustees: provided
that nothing herein contained shall be construed as author-
izing said lode to establish any lottery or gift enterprise, or
to dispose of any property by lot or chance.
4. Three trustees shall constitute a quorum for the trans-
action of business, but it shall require a majority of all the
trustecs to constitute a quorum for the sale of real estate.
5. This act shall take effect from its passage, and shall be
subject to amendment, modification or repeal at the pleasure
of the general assembly.
