Chap. 55.—An ACT to provide for removing obstructions in Bus}
river, in Prince Edward county, Virginia.
In force January 28, 1884,
1. Be it enacted by the general assembly of Virginia, That
it shall be lawful for the board of supervisors of Prince Ed.
ward county, Virginia, to impose, levy, and cause to be col.
lected a tax of not exceeding fifteen cents per acre, upon all
low grounds subject to overflow, lying on either side ot Bush
river in said county, and to apply said tax to the purpose of
cleaning out and removing the abstr uctions from said river,
along the line of the lands so taxed as aforesaid.
2. The said board of supervisors shall have power to divide
the lands so subject to taxation, into districts, not exceeding
four in number, and to appoint, on the application of a ma-
jority of the landholders in any of said districts, a suitable
person to act as overseer of river improvement, who shall re-
ceive not exceeding one dollar and fifty cents per day, for
each day’s actual service in superintending said improve-
ments. The said overseer shall bave the powers of a collec-
tor of taxes in collecting the amount of taxes levied under the
provisions of this act: provided that any such landholder
shall have the option of paying the amount of his tax in
work, labor, and materials upon said improvement, or in
money, a8 he may think proper.
3. Any person felling trees or putting any obstructions in
said river, and not removing the same within ten days atter
due notice by the aforesaid overseer, shail pay a fine of not
leas than one nor more than five dollars for each and ev ery
offence, on correction before a justice of the peace.
4. This act shall be in force trom its passage.
