Chap. 541.—An ACT to incorporate the Young Men’s Christian Asso-
ciation of Luray, in the town of Luray.
Approved March 19, 1884.
1. Be it enacted by the general assembly of Virginia, That
the members of the Young Men’s Christian association of
Luray, and such other persons, whether minors or adults,
as may hereafter become members of the same, shall be and
are hereby declared to be a pody politic and corporate, by
the name, style, and title of the Young Men’s Christian As-
sociation of Luray; to have perpetual succession; to have
ower to take, hold and dispose of, for the use of the said
oung Men’s Christian association, any and all kinds of
property, real estate, goods, chattels, and sum or sums of
money, by gift, bargain, grant, sale, will, devise or bequest,
or otherwise, from any person or persons whomsoever, capa-
ble of making the same; and the same to grant, bargain, sell,
and a good convey ance to make, for the use of the Young
Men’s Christian association aforesaid ; to sue and to be sued;
to contract and be contracted with; ‘and do all other acta,
and enjoy all other powers incident to similar corporations
in general, under and subject to the laws of this common-
wealth.
2. That the officers of said corporation shall be such as
said corporation may think necessary, and shall be elected
by ballot, at such time and in such manner as the by-laws
and rules of the corporation may direct: provided that no
person belonging to said Young Men’s Christian association,
shall be eligible to office therein, or have the privilege of
voting at any such an election, other than a male member of
any of the evangelical christian denominations, that recog-
nize in their doctrines the divinity of Jesus Christ, the Lord
and Saviour of mankind, and a-future state of the eternal re-
ward and paniskuust—eck member being at least twelve
years of age.
3. That the members of said corporation, who are, or ma
be, entitled to vote at any election of officers, shall have full
power and authority to make such rules and by-laws, that
sball be necessary for the government and promotion of the
interests of said corporation: provided that no rule or by-
law aforesaid, shall be valid if inconsistent with this act, or
the constitution and laws of this state or the United States.
4. That the Young Men’s Christian association may make
such alterations or amendments to its rules and by-laws, as
it may deem necessary: provided that none of said altera-
tions are contrary to the provisions herein contained.
5. That the following persons, citizens of Luray, shall con-
stitute the officers of the association for one year, commenc-
ing March one, cighteen hundred and eighty-four: John H.
Read, president; Charles Armand Miller, first vice-president ;
J. E. Shenk, second vice-president; S. A. Walton, treasurer ;
A. EK. Sandle, secretary; B. F. Batman, assistant secretary.
