Chap. 50.—An ACT to incorporate the Grand Lodge, Knights of Pythias
of Virginia.
In force January 28, 1884.
1. Be it enacted by the general assembly of Virginia, That
H. C. G. Hartman, L. B. Allen, H. A. Atkinson, Junior, D. J.
Turner, Junior, W. C. Carrington, J. E. Rockwell, Charles T.
Loehr, J. H. Alexander, Walter A. Edwards, and all others
who now are, or may hereafter become members of the same
under its constitution and laws, be and they are hereby con-
stituted a body politic and corporate, by the name and style
of the Grand Lodge, Knights of Pythias of Virginia, and by
that name shall have perpetual succession and a common
seal; may sue and be used, plead and be impleaded, and in
all respects shall be invested with the rights, and privileges
conferred, and subject to the restrictions and regulations pre-
scribed for corporations by the general law, so far as the
same are applicable to this corporation and not inconsistent
with this act.
2. The objects ot this association shall be to make, estab-
lish, and promulgate such rules, orders, and reyulations for
the government and direction of the subordinate lodges within
its jurisdiction, as will enable them to carry out the purposes
of the order in aiding its sick and destitute, burying its dead,
taking care of the widows of its dec eased membe T'S, and
educating their orphans, and generally in cultivating and
romoting good conduct, and correct livi Ing among its mem-
bons.
3. The said corporation may institute subordinate lodges
in any county or corporation in this commonwealth. and shall
have power to make and adopt a constitution and by-laws,
and rules and regulations for the admission and expulsion of
members, and for their government, the election of its officers,
to detine their duties, and to take from such of them as may
be necessary, bond with security, conditioned for the faithful
performance of their duties; to give such direction for the
investment. of its funds, and for the protection and safe-keep-
ing of its property, re al and personal, as may be necessary.
4. This corporation may take by purchase, gift, devise or
bequest, and hold real and personal estate, and lease, rent,
sell, or otherwise dispose of the same, in such manner as may
seem most advantageous ; provided it shall not hold real
estate, exceeding five acres of land in any one county or cor-
poration within this commonwealth.
