Chap. 449.—An ACT to amend and re-enact section 6 of an act ap-
proved February 17, 1877, entitled an act to provided for working
and keeping the public roads in order in Clarke county.
Approved March 15, 1884.
1. Beit enacted by the general assembly of Virginia, That
section six of an act entitled an act to provide for working
and keeping the public roads in order in Clarke county, ap-
proved February seventeen, eighteen hundred and seventy-
seven, be amended and re-enacted so as to read as follows:
All male persons in each sub-district shall be enrolled by the
overseer for that district. and compelled to work on some
public read therein, two days in cach year, with the follow-
Ing exceptions, namely: persons under sixteen and over sixty
years of age, all ministers of the gospel, persons who reside
in a town that keeps its streets in order and provides for its
poor, and any person who has lost a leg or an arm; any per-
son who is otherwise disabled may be exempted on certificate
of the county court of such disability. A list of persons so
appointed to work on the public roads shall be made out in
alphabetical order and filed with the clerk of the district
board by the overseer. All persons working upon public
roads as provided in this section, shall be paid a reasonable
compensation, to be fixed by the district board of the district
in which the public roads may be, upon which such persons
may have worked, and to be paid out of the fund raised by
taxation in such district, by a warrant to be drawn by the
district board on the county treasurer, which shall not be
transferable.
2. This act shall be in force from its passage.
