Chap. 386.—An ACT to incorporate Stevens Lodge, number fourteen
hundred and thirty-five, of the Grand United Order of Odd Fellows,
of the county of Alexandria.
Approved March 10, 1884.
Whereas there is established in the county of Alexandria,
a benevolent institution known as Stevens Lodge, number
fourteen hundred and thirty-five, of the Grand United Order
of Odd Fellows, which has for its object mutual aid and assis-
tance to its members in time of ‘sickness, the burying of de-
ceased members, the support of their widows and the educa-
tion of their orphans; and whereas it is believed that the
facilities of the said institution for the accomplishment of its
benevolent purposes would be greatly promoted by obtaining
an act of incorporation of the trustees of the said Stevens
Lodge, number fourteen hundred and thirty-five, of the Grand
United Order of Odd Fellows; therefore,
1. Be it enacted by the general assembly of Virginia, That
Henry L. Holmes, Tibbett Allen, Jacob N. Williams, I. W.
Wormley, and J. W. Pendleton, and their successors, be and
they are hereby constituted and appointed a body politic and
corporate by the name and style of the trustees of Stevens
Lodge, number fourteen hundred and thirty-five, of the Grand
United Order of Odd Fellows of the county of Alexandria,
and by that name shall have a perpetual succession and a
common seal, may contract and be contracted with, sue and
be sued; may acquire, receive, hold, possess and enjoy, and
may rent; sell, convey, invest, and otherwise manage or dis-
pose of, as to them may seem most conducive to the interest
and promotion of the benevolent purposes of the said Stevens
Lodge, number fourteen hundred and thirty-five, of the Grand
United Order of Odd Fellows, of the county of Alexandria,
all lands money or other property, real or personal, which
may have been, or which may be given, or otherwise acquired,
for the use of the Stevens Lodge, number fourteen hundred
and thirty-five, of the United Order of Odd Fellows of the
county of Alexandria; and the said trustees and their suc-
cessors shall hold office as trustees no longer than they remain
members of the said Stevens Lodge, number fourteen hundred
and thirty-five, of the Grand United Order of Odd Fellows
of the county of Alexandria, or till their successors enter
upon the discharge of thcir duties as trustees: provided that
the sum of money so acquired, shall not exceed ten thousand
dollars, and the amount of land held by them shall not exceed
five acres in the county of Alexandria.
2. The trustees herein named shall continue to act as such
until their successors are duly elected and enter upon the
discharge of their duties as trustees.
3. The trustees, five in number, shall be elected annually,
according to the laws and rules of the aforesaid Stevens
Lodge, number fourteen hundred and thirty-five, of the Grand
United Order of Odd Fellows of the county of Alexandria,
and shall have power to appoint such officers as may bo re-
quisite, and shall exact from any of them such bonds, or other
security, in such penalty as the trustees shall direct, condi-
tioned for the faithful performance of their duties; and the
bonds of the secretary and treasurer of said lodge, and otber
officers of whom bonds may be required, may be made paya-
ble to said trustees: provided that nothing herein contained
shall be construed as authorizing said company to establish
any lottery or gift enterprise, or to dispose of any property
by lot or chance.
4. Three trustees shall constitute a quorum for the trans-
action of business, but it shall require a concurrence of all
the trustees for the sale of real estate.
5. This act shall take effect from its passage, and shall bo
subject to amendment, modification or repeal, at the pleasure
of the general assembly.
