Chap. 314.—An ACT to authorize and empower the Common Council
of the city of Petersburg, to issue bonds for a sum not exceeding one
hundred and fifty thousand dollars, for the purpose of aiding the Vir-
ginia and Carolina Railroad Company, in the construction of their
railroad.

Whereas it is deemed to the interest of the people of the
city of Petersburg, to have the Virginia and Carolina rail-
road company so construct their railroad as to have it run
through the said city: provided the common council of said
city, and the said company can agree upon the terms and
conditions upon which said city may aid said company in
constructing said railroad ; now, therefore,
1. Be it enacted by the general assembly of Virginia, That
the common council of said city of Petersburg, be and they
are hereby authorized and empowered, by a vote of two-
thirds of its members taken by yeas and nays, and recorded, to
issue the bonds of said city, for a sum not exceeding one hun-
dred and fifty thousand dollars, said bonds to be payable
thirty years after their date, with interest, at the rate of six
per centum per annum, payable semi-annually, and to be
registered, or with coupons attached, as said council may
direct, the bonds to be so issued, to be delivered to said Vir-
ginia and Carolina railroad company, in exchange for a like
amount of said company’s bonds, or to be donated to said
company, or a part of said bonds to be so issued by said
council to be donated to said company, and the residue
thereof to be exchanged for a like amount of said company’s
bonds, for the purpose of aiding said company in constructing
said railroad to and through the said city; such exchange of
bonds or donation of bonds, or exchange and donation of
bonds, to be upon such terms, conditions, and stipulations as
said council and said company may agree to, upon such
vote of said council.
2. This act shall be in force from its passage.
