Chap. 304.—An ACT giving the consent of this state to the acquisition
by the government of the United States, of so much lund as may be
necessary for a public building in the city of Staunton.
Approved March 7, 1884.
Whereas the Honorable H. Libby has introduced a bill in the
congress of the United States providing for a public building
at the city of Staunton for the accommodation of the postoffice
and internal revenue office of said city; and whereas said bill
provides that no money appropriated for said building shall
be available until a valid title to the site shall be vested in
the United States, and until the state of Virginia shall have
ceded to the United States concurrent jurisdiction over the
same during the time the United States shall be or remain
the owner thereof; and whereas it appears that unless pro-
vision is now made complying with the conditions of said
bill, a period of two years will intervene before said compli-
ance can be carried out, thus delaving the construction of
said building in the event the said bill becomes a law; there-
fore,
1. Beit enacted by the general assembly of Virginia, That
the consent of the state of Virginia is hereby given and
granted to the purchase or acquisition by the government of
the United States, or under the authority of the same, of so
much land as may be required for a site tor a publie building
for the accommodation of the postoftice and internal revenue
office, and other public offices at the city of Staunton and
state of Vir vinia.
2. That this stato retains concurrent jurisdiction with the
United States over such land, 80 that courts, magistrates and
Other officers of this state may take such cognizance, execute
such process, and discharge such other leeal functions within
the same, as may not be incompatible with the consent hereby
iven.
3. The lots, parcels or tracts of land so acquired, together
with the buildings and appurtenances for the purposes betore
mentioned, shall “be held exempt from all state, county and
municipal taxation so long as the United States shall be and
remain the owner thereof.
4, This act shall be in force from its passage.
