Chap. 225.—An ACT to incorporate the West Point and Aylett’s Turn-
pike Company.
Approved March 3, 1x84.
1. Be it enacted by the general assembly of Virginia, That
Ifansford Anderson, David Straughn, P. H. Adams, L. M.
Robingon, Jobn 8. DeFarges, Morgan Treat, D. G. Fisler, T.
P. Bagby, E. Wilkinson, H. I. Lewis, R. H. Williams, Isaac
Diggs, and Colonel W. R. Aylett, of King William county,
and such other persons as may hereafter be associated with
them, be and gre hereby made a body politic and corporate,
under the name, style, and title of The West Point and Ay-
lett's Turnpike Company, with plenary powers to construct
a turnpike road from the town of West Point, in King Wil-
liam county, Virginia, along the most practical route via King
William Courthouse to Aylett’s in same county. Said com-
pany is also hereby vested with full power and authority to
acquire by gift, purchase, or by condemnation according to
law, so much land, timber, and rock, as may be necessary for
the construction of said road: provided that said road shall
not be less than sixteen, nor more than thirty feet wide: and
provided the said work shall be commenced in two, and con-
cluded in ten years.
2. Books of subscription to the capital stock of said com-
pany may be opencd at any time and place designated by said
corporators, or any five of them, under the supervision of
themselves, or any person or persons appointed by them, who
are hereby authorized to act as commissioners. The capital
stock of said company shall not be less than one thousand
dollars, nor more than fifty thousand dollars, to be divided
into shares of twenty-five dollars each.
3. The said company is hereby clothed with all powers and
franchises conferred on turnpike companies by the general
laws of the state: provided that said company may be at
liberty to dispense with a summer or side road to said turn-
pike, and that the company shall not be compelled to pave or
cover the said road with stone or gravel.
4. The corporators and stockholders of each company shall
mect at West Point, in King William county, on the first
Monday in May next, or as soon thereafter as practicable; at
which time and place they shall elect a president and board
of directors, and such officers as they may deem necessary,
and pass any by-law, not in conflict with the constitution and
laws of this state or of the United States, which they may
deem necessary for their government; a majority of whom
shall constitute a quorum. All elections after the first held
by said company, shall be at such time and place as they may
direct. All officers elected by said company, shall hold their
offices for such length of time as may be agreed upon by said
company, and afterwards until their successors are elected
and qualified to enter upon the duties of their respective ofh-
ces. The term of all officers elected by said company, shall
commence at such time as may be prescribed by them.
5. Said company shall have the right to cross the beds of
such public roads as may be necessary.
6. A majority of the directors of said company, shall con-
stitute a quorum for the transaction of business.
7. This act shall be in force from its passage.
