Chap. 222.—An ACT to give the consent of this state to the purchase
by the United States, of certain real estate in the city of Fredericks-
burg, in order to erect a public building thereun, and exempt the same
from taxation.
Approved March 3, 1884.
Whereas it is represented to the gencral assembly that a
bill is now pending in the congress of the United States,
authorizing the latter to acquire by purchase, a lot of land in
the city of Freder icksburg, for the purpose of erecting thereon
a public building for a post office and other public uses,
1. Be it enacted by the general assembly of Virginia, That
the consent of this commonwealth he, and is hereby given to
said purchase, and when the same shall have been made, juris-
diction is hereby ceded to the government of the United
States, so that congress and the authorities of the federal
government shall have all lawful powers and control over and
in the same: provided however, that the consent herein given
shall not extend to the purchase or acquisition of more than
one acre of land for said purpose: and provided further, that
the state retains concurrent jurisdiction over the same in all
matters relating to the violation of the laws of this state, to
the execution and service of all process issued by or from the
courts of this state, its magistrates or other stato officers, in
pursuance of law, and in all other matters not incompatible
with the consent herein given, and the rightful authority of
the United States thereby acquired and to “be acquired under
this act.
2. The said real estate and the buildings that may be
erected thereon for said purposes, are hereby exempted from
all taxes imposed or to be imposed by this state, or the consti-
tuted authorities of the city of Fredericksburg, so long as the
sume shall be held and used by the federal government for
the purposes herein-above mentioned, and no longer.
3. This act shall be in force from its passage.
