Chap. 199.—JOINT RESOLUTION to employ counsel in a certain
coupon case pending before the United States circuit court.
Approved March 1, 1884.
Whereas information has come to the general assembly,
that within the past ten days, Mistress Anna K. Royal has in-
stituted in the circuit court of the United States, an action
against S. C. Greenhow, claiming a recovery of damages, be-
cause of the alleged trespass of said Greenhow, in refusal to
receive coupons tendered by said Mistress Royal, in payment
of taxes; and whereas by agreement of counsel and of parties,
the issues have been agreed in said case, and its trial is fixed
for an early day of the present week, for which purpose
Judee Bond has agreed to come to Richmond to hold a
special term; and whereas the state of Virginia is interested
in said case, and should be represented by counsel; therefore,
be it
Resolved (the house of delegates concurring), That the
nuditor of public accounts be authorized to employ counsel
upon such terms as may be agreed upon, to assist the attor-
nev-general in defending the interest of the commonwealth
in said case; the auditor of public accounts, and the attorney-
reneral concurring in the necessity for such additional coun-
cl, and the attor ney-general and his associates, if any, are
hereby instructed to apply for the postponement ‘of the said
cuse, to such time as it will regularly mature, and take such
other steps as to them may seem necessary for the full protec-
tion of the state.
