Chap. 146.—An ACT for the relief of the sureties of James Jones, late
treasurer of King George county.
Approved February 22, 1884.
1. Bo it enacted by the general assembly of Virginia, That
the auditor of public accounts is hereby author ized and direc-
ted to accept from George C. Marshall, E. D. Brown, C. L.
Jones, W. E. McClanahan, William S. Brown, C. H. Ashton,
William B. Coakley, William H. Gaines, R. H. Hudson, and
James M. Edwards, sureties of James E. Jones, late treasurer
of King George county, on his official bond, executed on the
third day of June, eizhteen hundred and seventy-five. or any
one or more of them, in full satisfaction of their indebtedness
under said bond to the state of Virginia, the bonds of the:
state of Virginia, with all unpaid coupons attached, issued
under the act of Febr uary fourteenth, eighteen hundred and
eighty-two, to the amount of the balance now due for the
revenue of the county of King George tor the year eighteen
hundred and seventy-cight, with interest at the rate of six
per centum per annum. And the said auditor is also hereby
authorized and directed to accept in full satisfaction and set-
tlement from William KE. McClanaban, William Merrill, Wil-
liam L. Spilman, R. H. Hudson, C. H. Ashton, Alexander
Pratt, C. C. Robinson, James M. Edwards, C. Lewis Jones,
William H. Gaines, William B. Co oakley, George C. Marshall,
and William 8. Brown, sureties of said James EK. Jones. late
treasurer of King George county, on bis official bond, execu-
ted on the fifth day of June, eighteen hundred and seventy-
nine, or any one or more of them, the bonds of the state of
Virginia hereinbefore described, with all unpaid coupons
attached, to the amount of the balances now due for the rev-
enue of the county of King George to the state for the years
eighteen hundred and seventy: -nine, eighteen hundred and
eighty, eighteen hundred and eivhty-one, eighteen hundred
and eighty-two, and eighteen hundred and cighty-three, by
reason of the default of the said James EF. Jones, with interest
thereon at the rate of six per centum perannum. Nothing
herein contained shall be construed as releasing said James E.
Jones from his liability for the difference between the amount
now due by him and the market value of the bonds hereby
directed to be received: provided the said bonds shall be paid
to the treasurer within six months after the passage of this
act: provided further, that this act shall not take effect unless
the said sureties of the said James E. Jones shall, within
ninety days trom the passage of this act, confess judgment i in
the circuit court of the city of Richmond for the whole
amount of said Jones’ indebtedness to the commonwealth, the
first named suretics for the amount due by said James E.
Jones tor the year eighteen hundred and seventy-eight, and
the last named for the amounts due by him for the years
eixhteen hundred and seventy-nine, eighteen hundred and
eighty, eighteen hundred and eighty-one, eighteen hundred
and cighty- two, and eighteen hundred and eivhty -three.
2. This act shall be in force trom its passage.
