Chap. 118.—An ACT to amend and re-enact sections three and six of
chapter 82, Code of Virginia, 1873, as amended by an act entitled an
act to amend and re-enact sections three and six of Code of Virginia
of 1873, regulating Lunatic Asvylums and the care of insane persons
and their estates, and to add additional sections thereto, approved
February 15, 1882, and sections fifty-nine and sixty of said act.
In force February 18, 18384.
1. Beit enacted by the general assembly of Virginia, That
sections three and six of chapter eighty-two, Code of Vi irginia
of eighteen hundred and seventy-three, as amended by an act
entitled an act to amend and re-enact sections three and six
of chapter eighty-two of the Code of eighteen hundred and
seventy- three, regulating lunatic asy lums and the care of
insane persons and their estates, and to add additional sec-
tions thereto, approved February fifteen, eighteen hundred
and eighty-two, and sections fifty-nine and sixty of said act,
be amended and re-enacted so as to read as follows:
§3. The board of directors of the Central, Eastern and
Western lunatic asylums shall consist of eleven members each.
The term of office shall be tor three years. commencing on the
fifteenth day of April, eighteen hundred and eighty- four, and
continue until their successors are elected and qualified. Six
directors shall constitute a court for the transaction of busi-
ness.
§6. Said boards of directors shall assemble on the fifteenth
day of April, eighteen hundred and eighty-four, or as soon
thereafter as possible, at the asylum for which they are ap-
pointed respectively. Each board shall appoint a superinten-
dent, who shall be a physician, and may appoint an executive
committee, and officers, nurses and attendants, and prescribe
their compensation. Any three or more of such directors
may examine persons brought tothe asylums as lunaties, and
order those found to be such to be received. In making ap-
pointments of superintendents, officers, nurses, and other at-
tendants for the respective asylums, the said board of direc-
tors shall make such appointment solely with reference to
fitness and business qualitications, without regard to party
affiliations, and cach of said boards of directors may remove
at any time any appointee, causing to be entered upon their
minutes the order of removal, together with the cause of
removal.
§59. The offices of all directors of said asylums, as at pre-
sent constituted, shall be and the same are hereby declared
vacant upon the fitteenth day of April. eighteen hundred and
eighty-four, and all offices therein filled by said boards of
directors, as at present constituted, shall be and the same are
hereby declared vacant upon the fifteenth day of April, eigh-
teen hundred and eighty-four.
§60. All acts and parts of acts inconsistent herewith are
hereby repealed.
2. This act shall be in force from its passage.
