Chap. 8.—An ACT to establish a ferry or bridge across the Rappahan-
nock river, at or near the town of Falmouth.
Approved January 14, 1882.
1. Be it enacted by the general assembly of Virginia, That
it shall be the duty of the Judge of Stafford and King George
counties, when petitioned by fifty voters (one-half of whom
shall be freebolders), from any one or more magisterial dis-
tricts, to order a vote as to whether or not they will be taxed
to build and operate a ferry or bridge across the Rappahan-
nock river, at some convenient point between Ficklin’s and
Scott’s bridges, not nearer than one hundred yards from
either of said bridges. If, at said election, any one or more
of the said districts should vote to tax themselves, the judge
of said counties shall order the supervisors of said county to
levy a tax sufficient to open and keep in order said ferry or
bridge. The judge shall appoint three commissioners, whose
duty it shall be to select and locate the said ferry or bridge,
with powers to condemn lands for landings and roads neces-
sary for said ferry or bridge. Said commissioners and their
successors, under the direction of the judge, shall control
ind manage such ferry or bridge in the interest of the dis-
ricts taxed for the opening and running of said ferry or
ridge, and shall have power to require the collection of tolls
rom all parties not resident in said districts, not to exceed,
ior each person, two cents, and for each wheel two cents;
‘or each horse, mule, or ox, two cents; and for sheep, cattle,
ind hogs one cent per head. The said tolls to be applied to
the maintenance and operating said ferry or bridge.
2. Should any one or more districts in the county of Kin
George, by a vote of the people, tax themselves to join with
Stafford, in the opening and maintenance of said ferry or
bridge, then all the provisions of section first shall apply
equally to said county of King George. .
3. The corporation of Fredericksburg may, by a vote of
her people or common council, avail herself of the benefits
of the provisions of the first section of this act.
4. The boards of supervisors: of said counties are hereby
empowered to borrow the necessary money with which to
construct said bridge or ferry, and the condemnation of
necessary lands therefor, and for roads thereto leading; and
they sre hereby empowered to issue bonds for the same, in
denominations of not less than twenty-five dollars, and bear-
ing rates of interest not exceeding six per centum, and for
the redemption thereof, they are hereby authorized to assess
the necessary tax, the same to be levied on said districts or
counties, applying for said bridge or ferry, in pursuance of
section the first.
5. Work on said ferry or bridge shall be commenced within
two years from the passage of this act, and be completed
within five years after such passage.
6. This act shall be in force from its passage.
