Chap. 223.—An ACT to prevent the catching of oysters at night or
on Sunday.

Approved March 6, 1882.
1. Be it enacted by the general assembly of Virginia, That
hereafter it shall not be lawful for any person to take or
catch oysters within the waters of this commonwealth, be-
tween one hour after sunset and one hour before sunrise, or
on a Sunday.
2. If any person shall take or catch oysters within the
waters of this state, between one hour after sunset and one
hour before sunrise, or on a Sunday, he shall be deemed
uilty of a misdemeanor, and upon conviction thereof, shall
be fined not less than fifty dollars, nor more than one hun-
dred dollars; and the canoe, vessel, or boat so employed in
catching or taking of oysters, shall be forfeited and sold.
One-half of the net proceeds of the sale thereof shall go to
the informer or informers, and one-half to the commonwealth.
3. Justices of the peace of the several counties shall have
concurrent jurisdiction with the county courts in all cases
arising under the provisions of this law.
4. This act shall be in force from its passage.
