CHAP. 67.—An ACT to amend and re-enact section 2. chapter 158,
Code 1873, in reference to exemptions of Hremen from jury ser-
vice.
Approved April 2, 1879.
1. Be it enacted by the cencral assembly, That section two
of chapter one buntred and fifty-eight of tac Code of eiehteen
hundred and seventy-three, be amended and re-enacted so as
to read as follows:
0 2. ‘Che governor and lieutenant-governor of the state, prac-
tiving attorneys, heensed practivin: physiciaus, officers of any
court, ari telegraph operators actually engraved in any odice in
this state, officers and persous who have served as members of
the tire department of a city or town for five years, (and all
persons who may become fremen after the passage of this act,
and shall serve as such for five years), and all persons men-
tioned in the second and third sections of chapter twenty-two
as exempted from ordinary military daty, except school com-
missioners, trustees of free schools, and officers of the militia
who resign their commissions after serving seven years
suecessively, and nen-commissioned officers and members of
volunteer companies, shall be exempted from serving on juries
in clvil and crimimal cases; and the citizens of Pang ler, Syxes
and Chincoteague islands in the county of Accomae, and Hog
and Cobb’s islas, din the county of Northampton, and the citi-
zens of Gwymas island in the county of Mathews. are hereby
exempted from jury service, except service on grand juries.
But to entitle the officers and members of a fire department,
and the officers and members of a volunteer company under
this section, the captain or chief officer of such department or
company shall annually on the first of May of each year fur-
nish to the clerk of the hustings or county court of the county,
city or town wherein such company or department may be, a
list containing the names of each member of his company or
department, and where there are contributing members to his
company or department, the name of each contributing mem-
ber shall be likewise furnished.
