CHAP. 52.—An ACT to incorporate the Zion Travellers, 4 benevolent
society of Danville, Virghula.
Approved April 1, 1879.
Whereas there has existed in the town of Danville for some
years past a benevolent society called the Zion Travellers,
which holds already considerable funds of capital money; and
whereas the said society is desirous of investing in a suitable
lot of land upon which to erect a house for the care of its sick
and destitute whenever it has amassed money sufficient, and
have unanimously prayed for a charter of incorporation, in
order to better promote its ends and control its affairs:
1. Be it enacted by the general assembly, That Ellen Bethel,
Lizzie Walters, Lucy Grasty, Lucinda Gunn, Moses Green,
Mary Brown, Lucy Buford, C. Smith, L. Bosseau, and their as-
sociates composing the said society, be and they are hereby in-
corporated and made a body politic, by the name and style of
The Zion Travellers, and shall have all the rights and powers
and be subject to all the restrictions prescribed in the fifty-
sixth and fifty-seventh chapters of the Code of eighteen hun-
dred and seventy-three, so far as the same are applicable to a
benevolent corporation, and as may be modified by this act.
2. The objects of this corporation shall be to take care of its
sick and destitute members, to bury its dead, and to support
the widows and orphan children of its members, and to en-
courage and promote good morals and knowledge among its
members and their families. It shall be a further object, as
soon as it is able, to purchase a suitable lot and erect thereon
a suitable house, which shall be used as a retreat for its sick
and destitute, and for such other purposes as shall further its
ends.
3. The said corporation may take and hold real and personal
, property suitable for its objects not to exceed in value twenty
thousand dollars. It may make such by-laws, rules and regu-
lations consistent with the laws of this state and the United
States as it may deem proper for the government of its mem-
bers and the management and control of its affairs, and for the
use, enjoyment and control of its property.
4, The members shall not exceed two hundred, and if at any
time the membership shall be less than twenty-five, the corpo-
ration hereby created shall bedissolved. The corporation may
be dissolved also by a two-thirds vote of all its members at a
special meeting, notice of which meeting shall be given at two
previous regular meetings, and by publication in a Danville
newspaper three times a week for twenty days before the said
special meeting. The mode of electing its members, of dis-
missing and excluding the same, shall be regulated by the by-
laws and ordinances of the corporation.
5. The corporation shall sue and be sued, and have all the
rights and privileges of a body politic, under the name and
style of The Zion Travellers.
6. Any alteration in this charter, save as to its objects and
purposes, may be made by the circuit or corporation court of
the town of Danville upon a two-thirds vote of all the mem-
bers approving the desired alteration.
7. This act shall be in force from its passage.
